Languages

The languages we speak

Twenty-three, across seven engines. Which engines serve a language is the thing that actually decides what you can do in it — how many preset voices exist, whether you can clone, and whether there is a light engine to run volume through — so that is what this page shows, per language, rather than a flag and a number.

Read this first: VoiceLabs is pre-launch. The engines below are what ships at launch; the studio is in development. And a caution worth more than a marketing line: our API validates the language code but does not yet refuse a language the chosen engine cannot speak, so asking an English-only engine for Swahili returns English-sounding audio rather than an error. Pick the engine from this table, not by trial.

Languages and the engines that serve them

Every language VoiceLabs generates speech in, with the engines that serve each and a link to its page where one exists.

Why only thirteen have their own page

Because on the other 10 there is nothing to decide. Danish, Dutch, Finnish, Greek, Hebrew, Malay, Norwegian, Swahili, Swedish, Turkishare each served by Chatterbox Multilingual and by no other engine, so a page for one of them could only say “use Chatterbox” in 10 different ways. They are real, supported languages — Chatterbox clones in all of them — and this table is where they are documented. The thirteen with more than one engine get pages because on those there is a genuine choice: which engine, which preset voices exist, and what the writing system costs a long script.

Dense writing systems get different treatment

Devanagari, Chinese, Japanese, Hangul, Arabic, Hebrew, Greek and Cyrillic all cost more tokens per character than Latin script does — Devanagari roughly four times as much. Splitting a long script on a flat character count therefore overshoots the engine’s own token ceiling and the tail is discarded, with the request still reporting success. Our splitter prices each chunk in estimated tokens with a per-script cost instead, which is why long-form generation in those languages completes. The engines page has the detail, and the measurement it came from.

One plan covers every engine and every language on this page.
